Tricholomopsis flavissima (Smith) Singer Cap 3-5cm across, broadly convex becoming flatter and centrally depressed; even chrome yellow all over but darker on the center disc; dry and finely hairy, sometimes becoming more scaly on the disc and sometimes margin fringed with clusters of tiny hairs. Gills adnate or notched, subdistant; strong yellow with brighter edges appearing gelatinous under the lens. Stem 20-50 x 3-6mm, hollow, slightly curved; pale when young from thin, yellowish partial veil, the same color as cap; appressed, minute hairs. Flesh dull yellow. Odor faintly fragrant. Taste slightly peppery. Spores globose, 7-9 X 7-9µ. Deposit white. Pleurocystidia absent; cheilocystidia present. Habitat scattered or in clusters or tufts on coniferous wood. Frequent. Found in the Pacific Northwest. Season September-October. Edibility not known -avoid. Comment The two mushrooms at the top left of the photograph and the two at the bottom right are Tricholomopsis flavissima, the other two with the darker colors are Tricholomopsis decora (q.v.; nobody can be right all the time!). |
